Where Should Solar Go on a Working Farm?
A barn roof might be the obvious answer. Sometimes it is.
But an older roof may not be ready for solar. Another agricultural building might offer better space. Open land could support a modest ground-mounted system without interfering with the operation. And if the land within the solar footprint needs to remain productive, agrivoltaics creates another possibility.
Before deciding where the panels belong, it helps to look at the property as a whole.
What happens in the buildings? Which land needs to remain in production? Where does the farm use electricity? Are there known plans for new equipment, buildings, or a change in the operation?
Those questions can point us toward a solar project that fits the farm instead of forcing the farm to accommodate the solar.

Solar Is Only Part of the Energy Picture
A working farm may have several buildings, multiple electrical panels or meters, older wiring alongside newer equipment, pumps, refrigeration, motors, workshops, or a farm store.
That electrical infrastructure matters when you’re considering solar or battery storage.
Current Energy is both a solar and electrical contractor. That allows us to look beyond the panels and consider how a project connects with the electrical system that’s already supporting the farm.
Sometimes the conversation starts with solar. Sometimes it uncovers an electrical upgrade that needs attention first. Either way, understanding the whole system leads to better decisions.
Every Farm Gives Us a Different Starting Point
There isn’t one standard farm-solar design.
A small dairy and a diversified vegetable farm don’t use electricity the same way. Neither looks like an orchard, greenhouse operation, maple producer, livestock farm, or farm with a busy retail store.
So we begin with what’s there.
Look at the Buildings
Barns and agricultural buildings can be excellent locations for solar, but usable square footage isn’t enough to make that decision.
We consider roof condition, roofing material, orientation, shading, and whether the building itself is a reasonable long-term home for an array.
An older barn isn’t automatically ruled out. It simply deserves a closer look.
Understand the Land
Open land creates options, but that doesn’t mean the best answer is to cover productive acreage with conventional solar.
We want to know how the farm uses the property now and what land needs to remain available for crops, grazing, equipment, or future plans.
That helps distinguish between a conventional ground-mount and a situation where dual-use solar deserves consideration.
Understand When the Farm Uses Electricity
Annual electricity consumption tells only part of the story.
A farm may have seasonal irrigation, refrigeration during harvest, greenhouse loads in colder months, pumps that cycle throughout the day, or equipment used intensively for a relatively short part of the year.
Looking at how and when electricity is used gives us a better basis for discussing what solar can accomplish.
Identify the Loads That Matter Most
If backup power is part of the project, some electrical loads deserve more attention than others.
Water, refrigeration, ventilation, heating controls, freezers, and other equipment may become urgent during an outage. Other loads can wait.
That distinction can help create a more useful backup system without trying to run the entire property from a battery.
Compare the Options
Sometimes the barn roof wins.
Sometimes a small ground-mount is simpler. A farm that needs to keep using the same acreage may want to investigate agrivoltaics. Another may be less concerned about adding solar than it is about keeping a well or walk-in cooler operating when the power fails.
We’d rather compare those possibilities than begin with a predetermined answer.
Consider What the Farm May Need Next
Farms change over time.
A new greenhouse, walk-in cooler, piece of equipment, farm store, EV, building, or change in production can affect future electricity use.
If you already know something is coming, it belongs in the conversation now.
Look at the Financial Picture
Farm energy projects may have access to incentives, tax provisions, financing, or agricultural programs that differ from residential solar.
Those programs also change.

Current Energy is based in Bernardston, Massachusetts, at the northern end of the Pioneer Valley.
We work with farms throughout Franklin County, the Pioneer Valley, and Western Massachusetts, with southern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire also within our broader service area.
Being based in this part of New England matters. The farms here are part of the landscape and the local economy, from small livestock and dairy operations to vegetable farms, orchards, maple producers, greenhouses, farm stands, and other diversified agricultural businesses.
Massachusetts is also home to important work in agrivoltaics through UMass Amherst, giving Western Massachusetts farmers access to research and resources being developed here in our own region.
