Some Solar Problems Are Electrical Problems
A solar array is connected to the electrical system of your home. That means troubleshooting doesn’t always stop at the panels or inverter.

Solar systems are supposed to operate for decades. The company that installed yours may not.
Installers close, get acquired, leave the area, or stop servicing older systems. When that happens, homeowners can be left with equipment they own but no clear idea who to call when something stops working.
Start by identifying what equipment you have, what the system is doing, and whether the problem involves the panels, inverter, monitoring, or electrical system.
It’s also worth understanding what warranties are still in place. Manufacturer equipment warranties are generally separate from the workmanship or labor warranty provided by the original installer, and the terms vary by manufacturer and equipment.
Losing the original installer doesn’t mean you should stop paying attention to a system that may have many years of useful life ahead of it.

Not Every Production Drop Means Something Is Broken
Solar production changes throughout the year.
That’s especially important to remember in Western Massachusetts and the rest of northern New England. December doesn’t look like June. Winter brings shorter days, a lower sun angle, and periods of snow cover. Trees that weren’t a problem when a system was installed may also grow into the solar window over time.
A drop in production isn’t automatically a failed component. The question is whether the change makes sense for the season and the conditions.
Solar Panels Usually Aren't the First Thing to Worry About
Solar panels themselves require relatively little routine maintenance.
Rain handles much of the ordinary dust and pollen that collects on panels in New England. Cleaning may make sense in certain circumstances, but routine washing isn’t something every homeowner needs to schedule.
The electrical and electronic components of a solar system deserve just as much attention as the glass on the roof.
Your Roof and Your Solar System Have to Live Together
A solar system may last long enough to see significant changes to the house underneath it.
If your roof is approaching replacement, develops a leak, or needs other work, don’t treat the roof and solar array as unrelated projects. The work needs to be planned so the roofing and solar systems aren’t creating problems for each other.
This is especially relevant in a region with so many older homes, additions, barns, and roofs that have already been through several generations of work.

Solar Equipment Doesn't All Age at the Same Rate
A solar system isn’t one piece of equipment.
Panels, inverters, optimizers, microinverters, monitoring equipment, disconnects, wiring, and other components can have different expected service lives and different warranties.
If one component develops a problem, that doesn’t mean the entire solar system needs to be replaced.
Good solar service starts by finding the problem before deciding on the solution.

Do solar panels need regular maintenance?
Solar panels generally require relatively little routine maintenance. The more important job is keeping an eye on system performance and addressing equipment, monitoring, or electrical problems when they appear.
Should I remove snow from my solar panels?
Usually, no. Solar panels and mounting systems are designed for outdoor conditions, and snow will generally slide or melt away as conditions change.
Trying to clear panels from a snowy or icy roof can create unnecessary safety risks. If snow accumulation appears unusual or you’re concerned about the system, call before trying to handle it yourself.
Why has my solar production dropped?
There are many possibilities. Seasonal changes, snow, shade from growing trees, monitoring problems, inverter faults, and electrical issues can all affect what you’re seeing.
The first step is determining whether the change is expected or whether the system needs troubleshooting.
What should I do if my solar inverter shows an error?
Write down or photograph the error message or code if you can, and contact a solar service professional. That information can be useful when identifying the equipment and diagnosing the problem.
What happens to my solar warranty if the original installer goes out of business?
It depends on the warranty.
Manufacturer warranties on panels, inverters, and other equipment are generally separate from the workmanship or labor warranty offered by the installer. If the original installer is gone, some manufacturer coverage may still remain.
The specific answer depends on your equipment and warranty terms.
My solar monitoring stopped working. Does that mean my system stopped producing?
Not necessarily.
The monitoring system can lose communication even while the solar equipment continues operating. But without monitoring, you may not know whether the system is producing normally.
It’s worth finding out why the connection was lost.
Do solar panels need to be cleaned?
Not routinely in most residential situations in New England. Rain usually takes care of ordinary dust and pollen.
There are exceptions, and unusual soiling may justify cleaning, but regular panel washing shouldn’t be treated as a requirement for every solar system.
How long should a residential solar system last?
Solar panels are designed for long service lives, commonly measured in decades. Other components may need attention or replacement sooner.
That’s one reason it’s useful to think of solar maintenance as maintaining a system rather than maintaining only the panels.
